Sports History in San Jose
Sports go hand in hand with San Jose's rich history, including the Sharks hockey team, Earthquakes soccer team, and Giants minor league baseball team.

In San Jose, there have been several Olympians and athletes. In 1968, two SJSU athletes made history with their famous black power salute at the Olympics, now honored with a statue on campus. In addition to Brandi Chastain, Olympians Kristi Yamaguchi and Polina Edmunds, basketball player Aaron Gordon, and the late football coach Bill Walsh, there are other notable athletes with San Jose ties. Hometown heroes in non-conventional sports include Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie, who won the hot dog eating contest.
Before being sold in 1988, the first Earthquakes franchise played fourteen seasons in San Jose. After 1996, the Clash played at Spartan Stadium in San Jose. In 1999, MLS renamed the Clash as the Earthquakes. After the team moved to Houston in 2005, San Jose started a new team, returning to the league in 2008 and presently playing at Avaya Stadium. Avaya Stadium has hosted qualifying matches and friendly matches between the USA men's and women's national teams in addition to hosting the Earthquakes.
Since 1990, the Sharks have been playing in San Jose. A hockey team returned to Northern California after the California Golden Seals franchise left Oakland in 1976. There is an exact table at House of Pizza where hockey advocates planned to bid for the NHL team to find a home. Sharks' success has made San Jose a growing hockey town and has heavily influenced locals' culture. San Jose became a minor league affiliate of the Sharks in 2015.

In addition to the Bees, Missions, and Expos, San Jose also has numerous minor league baseball teams. Taking a look at the San Jose Giants minor league team will reveal who the next all-stars heading to the big leagues will be. There are several notable Giants alumni, including Madison Bumgarner, Pablo Sandoval, Buster Posey, and Tim Lincecum.

Numerous sporting events have been hosted in San Jose, from the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic to the College Football National Championships to NHL All-Star Game and Super Bowl 50.
